Key Takeaways

  • Federal Minister Ahad Cheema aims to increase Pakistan’s rice yield by 15 percent.
  • A feasibility study will assess the economic viability and cost-effectiveness of rice planters.
  • The initiative seeks to involve provincial governments and private companies in the distribution and maintenance of planters.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Division Senator Ahad Cheema has announced plans to boost Pakistan’s rice yield by up to 15 percent through the use of rice planters. At a meeting chaired by Cheema, the potential of this technology was reviewed, with a focus on Punjab and Sindh, the country’s major rice-growing areas.

Cheema directed the Secretary of Food to prepare a comprehensive feasibility study, which will assess the economic viability of the initiative, its potential to improve cost-effectiveness, and its likely impact on rice exports. The study will also propose a cost-sharing model involving the federal government, provincial governments, and farmers.

The minister emphasized the need for a technology-transfer programme that will cover farmer training, after-sales service, and technical support. He called for consultations with the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), the Engineering Development Board (EDB), and other provincial stakeholders and private companies already using rice planters.

Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Food Ahmad Umair, Secretary of Food Amer Ali Ahmad, and Secretary of Industries, along with senior officials, attended the meeting. The initiative aims to ensure that the technology is used effectively and equitably across relevant rice-growing areas.

Cheema stated that if the study establishes a viable case, the federal government will invest in the initiative in partnership with provincial governments. The study will also identify suitable farmers and propose a distribution plan for the planters.

The minister highlighted the importance of supporting the expertise needed to use and maintain the machinery, calling for a technology-transfer programme. This will ensure that farmers are well-equipped to handle the new technology.

The initiative seeks to improve the cost-effectiveness of rice production, which could lower production costs per kilogram. This could have a significant impact on the country’s rice exports, potentially increasing the yield and improving the overall economic viability of the sector.

Cheema’s plan is part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and support the rice industry in Pakistan. The use of rice planters is seen as a key component in achieving these goals.
