Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft has committed to reducing Windows 11’s memory usage.
  • The move comes as global memory shortages push manufacturers toward 8GB RAM configurations.
  • Improvements include using a more efficient memory allocator and tuning WinUI 3.

Microsoft has announced plans to optimize its operating system, Windows 11, for laptops with 8 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM), addressing the growing demand from the artificial intelligence industry that is consuming a significant share of global memory supplies.

Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s President of Windows and Devices, confirmed in an update on the company's website that it will focus on 'memory optimization for 8GB and above' to make its operating system faster and more responsive on these devices.

While users can reduce memory usage by disabling startup applications and stopping unnecessary background services, Microsoft must address the underlying memory consumption of Windows itself, including how much RAM it uses before any application is opened.

The company has already introduced several changes to improve Windows memory efficiency. These include using a more efficient memory allocator to reduce overhead across applications and system components, as well as continuing to tune WinUI 3 so that applications built with it consume less memory.

Microsoft also plans to improve the efficiency of Chromium and WebView2 components when used by Windows, which should make systems with 8GB of RAM more comfortable to use.

A report from Wccftech highlighted that a laptop with 32GB of memory reached 40 percent RAM usage with only a few Chrome tabs open. The publication acknowledged some of the memory was cached but still showed the scale of Windows 11’s memory consumption.

Until supply and demand stabilize, laptops with 8GB of RAM may increasingly replace 16GB configurations as the standard option in lower price categories. Wccftech reported that the shortage could continue until 2028, forcing manufacturers to accept lower RAM configurations within affordable price ranges.

Microsoft’s efforts are part of a broader industry trend where companies are being forced to adapt to memory shortages by optimizing their software for devices with less RAM.
