Key Takeaways

  • Malaysia’s palm oil inventories hit an eight-month high in August.
  • Production surged to the highest level since December, while exports fell.
  • Stocks rose 7.48% to 2.82 million metric tons, with output at 1.82 million tons.

Malaysia’s palm oil inventories reached an eight-month high in August, according to data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board. The increase in stocks was driven by a surge in production, which hit the highest level since December 2025.

Crude palm oil production in August increased by 1.39% from July, reaching 1.82 million tons, marking the third consecutive monthly gain. This production level is the highest since December 2025, reflecting a significant rise in output.

However, exports declined by 7.5% to 1.29 million tons, marking a reversal from two consecutive months of growth. This drop in exports has contributed to the increase in inventories.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board reported that August inventories rose to 2.82 million metric tons, up 7.48% from July. This increase in stocks has extended gains for a fifth consecutive month.

A Reuters survey had forecast August inventories at 2.76 million tons, with output seen at 1.82 million tons and exports at 1.32 million tons. The actual figures exceeded these expectations, indicating a stronger-than-expected increase in inventories.

The rise in palm oil stocks is a result of the higher production levels, which have outpaced the rate of exports. This situation could impact the market dynamics and pricing of palm oil in the coming months.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board’s data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the industry, particularly in balancing production and export levels. The increase in inventories may lead to increased competition and potential price pressures in the market.

Industry analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as the balance between production and exports will continue to influence the future direction of the palm oil market.
