Key Takeaways

  • Indian equity benchmarks ended little changed on Tuesday.
  • Elevated oil prices and anticipation of Federal Reserve’s policy decision influenced market sentiment.
  • Gains in small-caps and mid-caps were driven by post-earnings jumps in Sona, Ather Energy, and Mankind Pharma.

Indian equity benchmarks remained stable on Tuesday, with the Nifty 50 falling 0.02% to 22,749.75 and the Sensex shedding 0.01% to 73,598.67. The market’s cautious mood was largely attributed to elevated oil prices, which traded near $116 per barrel, close to a six-month high, following attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Despite the overall stability, India’s broader small-caps and mid-caps saw significant gains, rising 2.7% and 1%, respectively. This was driven by a post-earnings jump in companies like Sona, Ather Energy, and Mankind Pharma, as well as buying in defence stocks after the acquisition panel’s clearance of over $22 billion worth of proposals.

The market’s focus this week is on the Federal Reserve, which is expected to keep interest rates steady on Wednesday before resuming its tightening cycle in December due to ongoing inflation concerns. Thomas Priju, portfolio manager at Karma Capital, warned that a hawkish stance could keep global financial conditions tight, weigh on emerging-market flows, and create near-term volatility.

The Nifty 50 has experienced a significant decline, losing about 13% so far in 2026, on course for its worst performance in over a decade. This decline is largely attributed to soaring crude oil prices fueled by the Middle East war and a lack of large AI exposure, which have propelled record foreign outflows. As the world’s third-largest crude oil importer, India is particularly vulnerable to higher oil prices, which intensify inflationary pressures, strain the fiscal balance, and squeeze corporate profitability.

Heavyweight financials and information technology stocks fell 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively, while auto and pharma stocks rose 1.5% and 1.9%. Tata Consumer Products saw a 6.8% increase after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter profit, driven by steady demand for its packaged foods and beverages as the company expands beyond traditional tea and salt businesses.

Investors are closely watching the Federal Reserve’s policy decision, which is expected to keep rates steady on Wednesday. However, the market remains cautious, with concerns over the potential impact of a hawkish stance on global financial conditions and emerging-market flows.

The market’s performance reflects the broader economic challenges faced by India, particularly the impact of rising oil prices and the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Analysts predict that the market’s performance will continue to be influenced by these factors in the coming weeks.

A hawkish stance could keep global financial conditions tight, weigh on emerging-market flows and create near-term volatility.
