Gen Z and Millennials Drive Record Investor Growth on PSX
New investor registrations across Pakistan during July highlight the growing interest in stock market investments.

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) saw a record number of new investor accounts in July.
  • 84% of the new accounts were held by male investors, while 16% were female.
  • Punjab led with the highest number of new registrations.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a significant surge in investor participation during July, recording its highest-ever monthly increase. A total of 25,140 new investor accounts were opened, marking a notable milestone for the stock market.

Gen Z and Millennials played a pivotal role in this growth, with 84% of the new accounts being held by male investors aged between 18 to 30, followed closely by those aged 31 to 45. The data from the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited highlighted that 59% of these new accounts were Sahulat accounts, while 41% were regular investor accounts.

Among the unique investor numbers issued during July, excluding corporate accounts, 25,111 were opened, with Punjab leading the country in new registrations at 12,917 accounts. Sindh followed closely with 8,126 new accounts, while Islamabad recorded 1,460 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa added 1,828.

Balochistan registered a modest 405 new accounts, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded 175, Gilgit-Baltistan added 91, and 138 accounts were opened by overseas Pakistanis. This diverse distribution across the country underscores the widespread appeal of stock market investments among different regions.

The Sahulat accounts, which are typically associated with younger investors, accounted for a significant portion of the new registrations, further emphasizing the strong participation from Gen Z and Millennials in the financial markets.

While the majority of new accounts were held by male investors, female participation was not negligible. The 16% share of female investors indicates that women are also increasingly engaging with the stock market.
