Key Takeaways

  • China’s yuan rose to a 3.5-year high against the US dollar.
  • Strong export growth and inflation data buoyed the currency.
  • Spot yuan traded at 6.7076 to the dollar, up 0.04%.

China’s yuan strengthened against the US dollar on Wednesday, reaching a 3.5-year high as a result of robust export growth and inflation data. The currency rose to 6.7076 per dollar, marking its strongest level since February 2023.

According to official data, China’s August producer price index (PPI) increased by 3.8% year-on-year, surpassing the expected 3.6% growth. The consumer price index (CPI) also saw an uptick, rising 0.8% year-on-year, compared to 0.5% in July.

The improvement in inflation data was coupled with strong export figures, with China’s August exports surging by 25% year-on-year. High-tech and AI-related demand led the export growth, providing a significant boost to the yuan’s value.

Nanhua Futures analysts noted, 'Export growth picked up moderately and momentum remained strong… strong exports continued to offer vital support for yuan’s appreciation.'

Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 6.7769 per dollar, its strongest since February 8, 2023. This rate was 727 pips weaker than the Reuters’ estimate, marking the largest weak side deviation since February 27 this year.

Despite the positive indicators, analysts pointed out that domestic demand in China remains subdued, which could dampen yuan sentiment. Traders are also closely monitoring US inflation data this week to gauge the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path.

Offshore yuan traded at 6.7052 per dollar, up about 0.03% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was at 98.77.

The yuan’s appreciation is seen as a positive sign for the Chinese economy, reflecting improved trade conditions and economic resilience. However, the ongoing challenges in domestic demand will continue to be a factor in the currency’s performance.
