The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) uncovered a fraud involving unexplained assets valued at Rs 9.41 billion and subsequently registered a criminal case under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010. The Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) detected this fraud by analysing the FBR database, with assistance from Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL).
This analysis flagged 85 taxpayers who amended their wealth statements between March 2025 and June 2026, covering tax years from 2014 to 2019. Specifically, one taxpayer in the Lahore region revised a wealth statement for tax year 2015 in May 2026, adding fictitious funds amounting to Rs 102.8 million.
The tax amount allegedly evaded in this Lahore instance surpasses Rs 46 million. Furthermore, the Regional Directorates of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) initiated 48 criminal inquiries across Pakistan.
FBR stated that such wealth statement revisions were not permissible because Section 116(3) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, prohibits revising a wealth statement after five years from the original return's due date.
