Thai Factory Output Surpasses Expectations in August
Thailand’s manufacturing sector shows robust growth, with factory output rising by 4.44% in August.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand’s manufacturing production index increased by 4.44% in August compared to the same period last year.
  • The rise was stronger than the 1.0% forecast by analysts, driven by higher electronics production.
  • The ministry has adjusted its methodology to better reflect the country’s new economic structure.

Thailand’s manufacturing sector has shown robust growth, with the factory output index rising by 4.44% in August compared to the same period last year, according to the industry ministry. This growth exceeded the 1.0% forecast by analysts, as reported by Reuters.

Supakit Boonsiri, head of the ministry’s industrial economics office, attributed the stronger-than-expected growth to higher electronics production, government stimulus measures, and a weaker baht, which made exports more competitive.

The ministry has also revised its methodology for calculating the manufacturing production index (MPI), incorporating more electronics products and adjusting weightings to align with the country’s evolving economic structure. This adjustment has led to a re-evaluation of previous data, with the MPI for July now showing a 3.97% increase compared to the previously reported 0.46%.

In light of these changes, the ministry has updated its forecast for factory output growth this year, predicting a rise of 2.75% to 3.75%, up from the earlier estimate of 0.25%. These revised projections reflect the ministry’s confidence in the sector’s resilience and potential for further growth.

The ministry’s efforts to modernize the MPI calculation are part of a broader strategy to support Thailand’s economic transformation. By incorporating more up-to-date data and adjusting weights, the ministry aims to provide a more accurate reflection of the manufacturing sector’s performance and potential.
