New Obesity Drug Retatrutide Proves Highly Effective in Clinical Trials
Participants in the retatrutide clinical trial, showing the diverse group of individuals benefiting from the drug's effectiveness.

Key Takeaways

  • Patients lost up to 25% of their body weight after 80 weeks on the highest dose.
  • The drug also reduced knee pain by up to 62% and sleep apnea events by up to 57%.
  • More than 90% of participants with prediabetes saw their condition resolve by the end of the trial.

Researchers have published late-stage clinical trial data for the latest obesity drug, retatrutide, which is expected to be the most powerful formula yet. The results are in line with high expectations, with patients on the highest dose losing an average of 25% of their body weight after 80 weeks, and 30% after an extended period of 104 weeks.

More than a third of participants taking retatrutide lost 30% or more of their weight, indicating its effectiveness in weight loss. The drug also demonstrated significant improvements in cardiometabolic health, including reductions in blood pressure, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (bad cholesterol).

In a subset of participants with obesity-linked knee osteoarthritis, the drug reduced knee pain by up to 62%. Similarly, for those with obesity-linked obstructive sleep apnea, the number of sleep apnea events per hour was reduced by up to 57%. These findings suggest that retatrutide may offer comprehensive benefits beyond just weight loss.

The trial, which began in 2023, included 2,339 participants from 131 clinical trial sites in 11 countries. Participants were divided into four groups, receiving either 4 mg, 9 mg, 12 mg of retatrutide or a placebo. The average starting weight was around 113 kg (250 pounds), and the average body mass index (BMI) was 40.

Notably, the drug also showed promise in resolving prediabetes. At the start of the trial, more than a third of participants had prediabetes, and by the end, the condition had resolved in over 90% of those participants. This suggests that retatrutide may have broader health benefits beyond weight management.

The results of the trial were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlighting the potential of retatrutide as a groundbreaking treatment for obesity and related health conditions. The drug's effectiveness in reducing knee pain and sleep apnea events is particularly noteworthy, as these conditions are common among people with obesity.

While the trial results are promising, further research and regulatory approval are necessary before the drug can be widely available. However, the data presented so far indicate that retatrutide could be a significant advancement in the fight against obesity and its associated health risks.
