Key Takeaways

  • Ferran Torres scored the opening goal for Paris Saint-Germain against Olympique de Marseille.
  • PSG won 2-1, with Marquinhos scoring the winning goal.
  • Marseille's Timothy Weah was sent off, leaving the team a man down.

Ferran Torres continued his impressive form for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Torres, who scored in PSG’s previous match against Brest, came off the bench to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia just before the hour mark and headed in a Desire Doue cross to give PSG the lead in the 66th minute at the Velodrome.

England midfielder Angel Gomes equalized for Marseille on the 72nd minute, but PSG captain Marquinhos secured the win three minutes later, bundling in the rebound after his initial effort was saved by Marseille goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange.

Torres has now scored seven goals in six appearances since joining the reigning European champions from Barcelona, despite only starting three times.

PSG, now up to sixth in the table, are five points behind leaders AS Monaco after five fixtures. Marseille, who have now suffered four straight Ligue 1 defeats, are in the relegation zone.

The match was significant for both teams, with Marseille struggling and PSG looking to maintain their form ahead of international breaks.

Torres, a World Cup final hero, is in the Spain squad for their first game since the tournament, away to England in the UEFA Nations League.

Struggling Marseille, who have lost five in a row in all competitions, face a three-week break in club football.

Monaco extended their unbeaten start to the campaign by beating RC Lens 2-1, and are two points clear at the top of Ligue 1 from both Olympique Lyonnais and Paris FC.
