Two Israeli ministers have proposed the mass removal of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, reigniting fears among the Palestinian community and international observers.

Far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir presented a seven-year plan for 'voluntary emigration' during a press conference on Thursday night, stating that he would seek the creation of a 'ministry in charge of emigration' in the next government.

Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed similar sentiments, stating that 'no real solution for Gaza in the end without this migration' and that Israel is 'fully prepared to move them out if it becomes possible by sea, by air, by every way possible.'

The proposals come as Israel prepares for a general election on October 27, with the current government facing challenges following a military campaign that began in October 2023 and devastated Gaza, a territory with a population of over two million.

Palestinian officials, such as Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of Gaza's government media office, have expressed deep-rooted opposition to the proposals, stating, 'The Palestinian people are deeply rooted in their land and will not be intimidated by such threats.'

The proposals have raised fears of a new 'Nakba,' the term used to describe the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in 1948 during the founding of the state of Israel.

Despite US-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, large-scale fighting has not ceased, and progress towards a permanent peace plan remains elusive.

Israeli officials have denied any intention to forcibly transfer Gaza's population, emphasizing that the proposals are for 'voluntary emigration.'
