The federal government has once again adjusted the prices of diesel and petrol, effective from September 5 to September 7, 2026. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of diesel (High Speed Diesel, HSD) was increased by Rs3.74 per litre, bringing the total price to Rs378.05 per litre. Simultaneously, the price of petrol (Motor Spirit) was reduced by Rs3.13 per litre, lowering the price to Rs345.87 per litre.

This adjustment follows a series of price changes in recent months. On September 3, the government increased the price of petrol by Rs2.29 per litre and that of HSD by Rs1.11 per litre. Prior to this, on September 2, the government had raised the price of petrol by Rs2.84 per litre and HSD by Rs2.28 per litre.

Government Adjusts Fuel Prices Again

The government continues to levy Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. These taxes and duties are consistent across all price adjustments, reflecting the government's ongoing commitment to managing fuel prices in line with international market trends and other cost factors.

The new prices will remain in effect until Monday, September 7, 2026, in line with the government's practice of adjusting fuel prices based on international oil markets and other cost factors. The government had previously announced that fuel prices would be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices, following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US.

These adjustments are part of a broader strategy to manage fuel prices and ensure supply stability amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The government has been implementing measures to conserve fuel and mitigate the impact of potential oil supply disruptions, which have been exacerbated by the conflict between Iran and the US.

The government's decision to adjust fuel prices frequently is aimed at maintaining a balance between affordability and market realities. The fluctuating prices reflect the dynamic nature of global oil markets and the government's efforts to keep pace with these changes.

Petrol prices had peaked at Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs266 in the first week of March. Similarly, the price of HSD had started rising from Rs281 per litre after the US-Iran war broke out on February 28, reaching a peak of Rs520.35 on April 3.
