Qatar Reports Progress in US-Iran Talks to End Strait Blockade

Key Takeaways

  • Qatar says mediators are making progress towards ending the US-Iran war.
  • Brent crude oil prices fell more than four percent after Qatar's comments.
  • US officials remain optimistic about reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar has reported that mediators, including itself, Pakistan and Oman, are making significant progress in efforts to end the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. These talks aim at restoring traffic through the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global oil shipments.

The news caused a drop in benchmark Brent crude prices by more than four percent on Tuesday, following similar losses seen on Monday due to hopes that an agreement could soon be reached. However, despite these developments, the strait remains virtually closed, with another ship reportedly under attack while attempting to cross it.

President Donald Trump had previously stated that talks with Iran had started and warned of a 'last chance' for Tehran to reach a deal. However, Iranian officials have denied any ongoing negotiations with the United States, insisting their only discussions are with Oman regarding the strait's management.

Senior US officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressed optimism about progress in discussions aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Bessent suggested a deal could be reached by Tuesday or Wednesday, while Rubio stated that 'there’s been progress made in those talks, but not finality yet.'

Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, confirmed that diplomatic contacts had reached ‘very progressive stages’ and highlighted the close coordination among mediators to facilitate negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Shipping risks remain high as Iran has halted most traffic through Hormuz while maintaining a blockade of Iran-related shipping and ports. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have also imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea, further restricting oil export routes.

A cargo vessel was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile near the Strait of Hormuz off Oman's coast, according to the UKMTO maritime security agency. Maritime sources confirmed that the vessel was a dry bulk ship and its crew had to abandon it; one seafarer is missing.

Iran has long demanded full control over the strait, arguing for shared oversight with Oman and the ability to intervene if necessary. This demand represents a significant shift in regional power dynamics and complicates US arguments against 'Operation Epic Fury', which was previously threatened but later cancelled by Trump.
