Qatar Continues Mediation Efforts for Iran-US Talks
Mediator Qatar continues diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions between the United States and Iran.

Key Takeaways

  • Qatar confirms ongoing efforts to mediate between the US and Iran.
  • Negotiations focus on a short-term resolution in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Tehran denies negotiations with Washington, but mediation continues.

Doha-based mediator Qatar has confirmed that efforts for a diplomatic solution between the United States and Iran are still ongoing. Foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari stated at a regular briefing that direct talks between the two sides were not planned.

The negotiations, according to Al Ansari, are focused on 'a short-term resolution that would help us reignite the talks and go back to the mediation efforts in its totality.'

US President Donald Trump had previously agreed to continue pursuing talks with Iran at the request of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries. He emphasized that Tehran has a 'last chance' in these negotiations.

The discussions are centered around the Strait of Hormuz, which could potentially open 'literally by tomorrow,' according to Trump’s statement.

Al Ansari expressed hope that if talks can be resumed soon, they might lead towards a major deal. He added, ‘We are hopeful that if we can get a resumption of the talks anytime soon, we’ll be able to push forward towards a major deal.’

Iran's foreign ministry has denied any ongoing negotiations with Washington, contradicting Qatar’s claims.

Qatar, alongside Pakistan and Oman, continues to play an active role in these mediation efforts. Al Ansari stated that ‘Qatar, Pakistan and now Oman are all working together,’ emphasizing the coordination between the three mediators.

The Gulf emirate has been more involved recently, facilitating talks between both sides and exchanging ideas and drafts.
