Google’s AI Assistant Now Handles Web Tasks for Users
Users can now have their Google AI assistant handle various online tasks through their browser.

Key Takeaways

  • Google has integrated its Gemini Spark AI assistant with Chrome.
  • The feature allows Spark to complete web-based tasks such as flight research and booking processes.
  • Users must keep Chrome running while Spark completes a task locally.

Google has enhanced the capabilities of its Gemini Spark AI assistant by integrating it directly into Chrome, enabling users to have their browser perform various online tasks with greater ease. This integration allows Spark to access websites where the user is already signed in and use stored login information from Google Password Manager.

With permission, Spark can handle a range of activities such as researching flights, starting booking processes, and scheduling apartment viewings. The assistant can also interact with websites on behalf of the user, making it easier for them to manage their online tasks without manually navigating through each step.

When using Chrome for the first time, the browser will request permission from the user before Spark starts a web-browsing task. This ensures that users are aware and consent to the assistant’s actions. Additionally, when connected to a local browser, Spark can access the same logged-in websites as the user and use saved login information to enter loyalty programmes or other online accounts.

Google has implemented several security measures to protect against prompt injection attacks, which could potentially make an AI assistant perform unwanted actions. These include both deterministic and probabilistic defences designed to thwart malicious instructions hidden in websites or user-generated content.

While Spark is currently rolling out in the United States, additional regions are expected to follow soon. The feature is also being expanded to Google AI Pro subscribers in more than 160 countries, providing broader access to this innovative technology. Users of Google Workspace services such as Gmail, Calendar, and Drive can now benefit from Spark’s enhanced capabilities.

For users who wish to use the assistant locally, they must ensure that Chrome remains running throughout the task. In some cases, if the device becomes unavailable, Spark may switch to a remote browser but will ask for user confirmation before proceeding with sensitive actions like sending messages or making purchases.

Google emphasizes that while these security measures are in place, users should still exercise caution and review any transactions initiated by Spark. The assistant will not complete payments independently; instead, it will return control to the user so they can verify details and finalize transactions.
