HEC Mandates AI Course Starting Fall 2026

Key Takeaways

  • The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a mandatory three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence course for all universities in Pakistan.
  • The decision was made during the 47th HEC meeting, chaired by Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar.
  • The national framework for responsible use of Generative AI is also under development.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has mandated that all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in Pakistan must include a mandatory three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence (AI) course starting from the Fall semester of 2026. This decision was made during the 47th meeting of the HEC, chaired by Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar at the commission’s secretariat in Islamabad.

According to the HEC, this initiative aims to equip graduates with essential AI knowledge and practical skills necessary for the modern, technology-driven global economy. The course will be applicable across all academic disciplines, ensuring a broad reach among students from various fields of study.

The meeting was attended by federal and provincial representatives, vice chancellors, and other HEC members. During this session, the commission also granted in-principle approval to a national framework for the responsible use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education institutions. However, the draft document will be further refined based on recommendations from commission members before its formal notification.

Additionally, the HEC approved a proposed Data Protection Policy aimed at safeguarding institutional data when shared with external government organizations through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This policy is currently under legal and technical refinement to incorporate feedback received during the meeting.

Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, in his capacity as HEC Chairman, highlighted the importance of integrating AI education into the curriculum to prepare students for future technological challenges. He stated: 'The inclusion of an AI course will not only enhance our graduates' employability but also ensure they are well-equipped to contribute positively to Pakistan’s digital transformation.'

The decision reflects a broader strategy by the HEC to modernize higher education in Pakistan, aligning it with global trends and technological advancements. The commission's efforts underscore its commitment to fostering an environment where students can develop critical skills necessary for success in the 21st century.

While the AI course is set to begin from Fall 2026, universities are encouraged to prepare accordingly to ensure a smooth implementation of this new requirement. This includes curriculum development and faculty training to deliver high-quality education on AI.
