KSE-100 Index Surges as Buying Interest Returns

KSE-100 Index Surges as Buying Interest Returns

Key Takeaways

  • The KSE-100 Index gained nearly 600 points at the opening of trading on Thursday.
  • Key sectors such as commercial banks and oil and gas exploration companies saw buying interest.
  • Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East contributed to the previous day's decline.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a significant rebound with the benchmark KSE-100 Index surging by nearly 600 points during the opening minutes of trading on Thursday. At 9:38am, the index was hovering at 175,023.62, marking an increase of 593.70 points or 0.34%. This marked a stark contrast to Wednesday's performance, where the KSE-100 Index settled at 174,429.93 points, down by 1,703.64 points or 0.97% due to escalating geopolitical tensions and rising international crude oil prices.

Buying interest was observed across various sectors, including commercial banks, fertiliser companies, oil and gas exploration firms, oil marketing companies (OMCs), power generation, and refineries. Notable index-heavy stocks such as ARL, HUBCO, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, MEBL, NBP, and UBL traded in the green, indicating a positive sentiment among investors.

The previous day's decline was attributed to heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which triggered widespread risk-off sentiment. Investors reduced their exposure to blue-chip and cyclical stocks amid persistent concerns over rising international crude oil prices. This led to a significant drop in the KSE-100 Index as investors sought safer assets.

Internationally, Asian markets showed signs of recovery on Thursday following positive developments from US technology firms. Earnings reports from Alphabet and Tesla highlighted substantial capital spending plans that are expected to benefit chipmakers in the region. The search giant raised its capital expenditure plans for the year, now expecting to spend between $195 billion and $205 billion, a move that is anticipated to boost Asian chipmakers like SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.

The escalating conflict in the Middle East also sent oil prices to six-week highs. Brent crude futures rose 2% to $96 per barrel after the US launched new strikes on Iran and Yemen’s Houthis targeted oil tankers in the Red Sea, widening the scope of a conflict that has cast a shadow over global markets. Rising oil prices have renewed inflationary concerns, pushing short-term US Treasury yields to 17-week highs as traders anticipate potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

Despite these challenges, the KSE-100 Index's recovery on Thursday suggests a shift in investor sentiment. The surge in buying interest indicates that investors are optimistic about the market’s resilience and potential for growth despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
