Evenepoel wins Tour de France time-trial, cuts Pogacar’s lead

Evenepoel wins Tour de France time-trial, cuts Pogacar’s lead

Key Takeaways

  • Belgian Remco Evenepoel triumphs in the 26.1km individual time-trial.
  • His victory reduces Tadej Pogacar's overall lead to 4min 32sec.
  • Evenepoel’s Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe teammate Florian Lipowitz crashes out of the race.

Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel secured a commanding victory in Tuesday's individual time-trial at the Tour de France, shaving valuable seconds off Tadej Pogacar’s overall lead. The 26-year-old, who is also an Olympic champion, finished 28 seconds ahead of the reigning Tour winner, Pogacar, in second place.

Evenepoel's performance was particularly significant as it came on Belgium's national holiday, making his win even more special. 'It’s amazing, it was a very nice TT (time-trial), a lot of people on the side of the road,' he said after crossing the finish line. His family and wife were present to witness this historic moment.

The victory also extended Evenepoel's gap to third-placed Isaac del Toro by more than two minutes, solidifying his position as a strong contender for the overall title. However, it was a bittersweet win for the Belgian rider, who expressed his concern over teammate Florian Lipowitz, who crashed during the race and had to be taken to medical assistance.

Lipowitz, who had been fifth overall until his crash, set the fourth fastest time in the three intermediate time-checks. His fall on a bend caused significant concern among the riders and spectators alike. 'That’s very unfortunate, it’s like a bittersweet pill to swallow with this victory, so I wish him all the best and I hope it’s not too bad,' Evenepoel said of his teammate.

The race began with Skjelmose setting the fastest time, but Evenepoel quickly established himself as the frontrunner. By the first time-check, he had already gained a significant lead over Pogacar and Skjelmose. The uphill part of the course saw Evenepoel gain most of his time advantage, with only Pogacar able to stay within touching distance.

Despite the challenges posed by the terrain, Evenepoel's consistent pace on the descent and flat run to the finish line ensured he maintained a comfortable lead. His performance not only reduced Pogacar’s overall lead but also highlighted his dominance in time-trials, where he has already secured three stage victories.

Pogacar and del Toro had a scare going through the same bend where Lipowitz fell but managed to stay upright. This incident underscored the high stakes of the race and the potential for accidents at any moment. The Tour de France continues with Evenepoel leading the way, while Pogacar faces mounting pressure to defend his title.

Evenepoel's win on Belgium’s national day adds a layer of significance to his victory, making it a memorable day for both the cyclist and his home country. His family was present to witness this historic moment, adding emotional depth to his triumph.
