Sindh Police to Establish High-Tech Digital Forensic Lab

Key Takeaways

  • Sindh Police plans to set up a digital forensic laboratory.
  • The initiative aims to enhance criminal investigations using modern technology.
  • Nearly 97% of current investigation cases involve digital devices.

Sindh Police has taken a significant step towards improving its investigative capabilities by deciding to establish a high-tech digital forensic laboratory. This development was discussed during a review meeting chaired by Inspector General (IG) Javed Alam Odho at the Central Police Office on Tuesday.

Speaking at the meeting, IG Odho highlighted the increasing reliance of modern crimes on technology and emphasized the need for adopting evidence-driven investigation techniques. He stated that conventional methods alone are no longer sufficient to handle contemporary criminal cases effectively.

The officials present at the meeting included senior police officers such as the additional IGP of the Counter-Terrorism Department, DIGs from various headquarters, IT, telecommunications, transport, and training divisions, along with assistant inspectors general. They reviewed proposals related to the establishment of the laboratory and were briefed by its project director on technical requirements and operational frameworks.

The meeting was informed that nearly 97% of current investigation cases now involve digital devices such as mobile phones and computers. This statistic underscores the growing importance of digital evidence in criminal investigations. Officials also noted that around 90% of criminal cases worldwide rely on digital evidence, further emphasizing the need for advanced forensic capabilities.

The new laboratory is expected to provide state-of-the-art facilities for analyzing digital data, which will significantly enhance the police's ability to solve complex crimes involving technology. The initiative aligns with global trends in law enforcement and aims to modernize Sindh Police’s investigative practices.

By setting up this high-tech facility, Sindh Police hopes to bridge the gap between traditional investigative methods and the rapidly evolving digital landscape of crime. This move is anticipated to not only improve case resolution rates but also ensure that justice is served more effectively in a technologically driven era.
