UNOPS to Hand Over US-Funded WASH Project in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Key Takeaways

  • A USD 7.6 million water, sanitation and hygiene project benefiting 300,000 people will be handed over.
  • The ceremony will take place tomorrow in Islamabad.
  • Improvements include new water supply schemes and sanitation facilities.

Tomorrow, the United Nations Office on Project Services (UNOPS) will host a handover ceremony for a USD 7.6 million water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) project that has benefited nearly 300,000 people in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The event is scheduled to take place in Islamabad.

The project, funded by the United States government, aims to improve access to safe drinking water, sanitation services, and climate-resilient infrastructure for some of Pakistan’s most vulnerable communities. It has delivered significant improvements through six new water supply schemes and a water quality testing laboratory serving approximately 164,000 people.

In addition, the initiative has upgraded school and community sanitation facilities benefiting over 6,400 individuals, supported hygiene awareness campaigns, and strengthened local institutional capacity for sustainable WASH service delivery. The handover ceremony will bring together senior government officials, representatives of the US government, development partners, and beneficiary communities.

The project marks a major milestone in efforts to enhance public health, climate resilience, and sustainable service delivery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. UNOPS has collaborated with provincial governments to implement this initiative, ensuring that the benefits reach those who need them most.

Speaking at a press conference, an official from UNOPS stated: 'This project is a testament to our commitment to improving living conditions for vulnerable communities in Pakistan. The handover ceremony will celebrate these achievements and pave the way for continued collaboration.'

The event will highlight the project’s accomplishments, including new water supply schemes, sanitation facilities, and strengthened local capacity, while celebrating the positive impact on public health, climate resilience, and sustainable service delivery.

Senior government officials from both provinces are expected to attend the ceremony alongside representatives of the US government and development partners. The beneficiary communities will also be present to witness the handover and express their gratitude for the improvements in their quality of life.
