Punjab allocates Rs3 billion for Quetta train project

Key Takeaways

  • Punjab government provides Rs3 billion for a shuttle train in Quetta.
  • The train will start operating on August 14, covering a 15km route.
  • Restoration plans include modernising Lahore and Taxila railway stations.

The Punjab government has committed Rs3 billion to the operation of a shuttle train in Quetta city, according to Pakistan Railways (PR) CEO Muhammad Hafeezullah. This initiative is part of broader efforts by various provincial governments to modernise and preserve the country's railway infrastructure.

Hafeezullah stated that the dedicated engines and coaches for the 'People’s Train' have been provided, and six stations in Quetta will be rehabilitated before its launch on August 14. The project is a collaborative effort between the PR and the Balochistan government, which has also contributed Rs3 billion towards the train's operation.

In addition to the Quetta initiative, the Sindh government has allocated Rs750 million for the restoration and modernisation of the Rohri/Sukkur railway station. This funding will be used to improve passenger facilities and ensure the station meets contemporary standards while preserving its historical significance.

The Lahore Railway Station is undergoing a comprehensive restoration plan that includes structural strengthening, waterproofing, roof rehabilitation, and the installation of heritage-style lighting. The project aims to maintain the original architectural identity of the building while introducing modern amenities such as family lounges and information desks.

Similarly, the Taxila Railway Station will see improvements through the development of pedestrian walkways, organised parking facilities, and adaptive reuse of old goods warehouses for café and restaurant use. These interventions are designed to enhance passenger experience and promote tourism in the region.

Hafeezullah highlighted that all projects adhere to internationally recognised heritage conservation principles. 'Inappropriate additions,' he noted, 'will be removed to restore and highlight the original architectural character of the buildings while modern lighting, improved accessibility, quality landscaping, a safer environment, and high-standard passenger facilities will be introduced.'

The primary objective of these initiatives is to preserve the historic identity and cultural significance of railway stations while providing modern amenities. The projects are expected to transform these spaces into secure, tourist-friendly public areas that cater to both passengers and visitors.

These developments reflect a concerted effort by provincial governments to revitalise Pakistan's rail network, improve passenger services, and promote tourism through the preservation of historical landmarks.

'Not only Punjab, other provinces too are rendering cooperation to improve the rail infrastructure, passenger facilitation and the train operations across the country,' said Mr Hafeezullah while talking to Dawn on Sunday.
