Chinese AI Startup Moonshot Unveils World's Largest Open AI Model, Competing with US Rivals

Key Takeaways

  • Chinese AI startup Moonshot has unveiled Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model.
  • The launch highlights the narrowing gap between China’s and US AI systems.
  • Kimi K3 outperformed several OpenAI models in third-party evaluations.

Chinese AI startup Moonshot has unveiled Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model that it claims is the world's largest open-weight AI system. This launch comes just a month after US giants Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models were abruptly withdrawn by the US government due to security concerns.

Moonshot stated that Kimi K3 performs competitively with Anthropic’s Fable 5 (with fallback) and substantially outperforms OpenAI's Opus 4.8, GPT 5.6 Sol, and GPT 5.5 in terms of GPU kernel optimisation. The term refers to techniques that maximise AI hardware utilisation and minimise latency.

The model features a one million-token context window, allowing it to process and retain significantly more information than earlier generations in a single prompt. Third-party evaluations have shown strong results; Arena.ai ranked Kimi K3 first in web interface-building capabilities, while Vals AI placed it second overall behind Fable 5.

The launch of Kimi K3 underscores the rapid advancement of China's open AI ecosystem and its growing competitiveness with US rivals. Companies such as Moonshot, Z.ai, and MiniMax are releasing increasingly powerful models at lower costs, challenging long-held assumptions that Chinese developers lag their American peers by months.

Moonshot’s Kimi K3 is designed for advanced reasoning, long-horizon coding, and knowledge work. The model incorporates two significant architectural upgrades that improve computing efficiency and enable it to complete long-horizon coding tasks with minimal human supervision.

The race toward trillion-parameter systems reflects growing demand for autonomous systems capable of handling complex reasoning tasks. Leading AI labs are also pursuing systems capable of autonomous self-improvement, a process often referred to as recursive self-improvement. Before Kimi K3’s release, Meituan’s LongCat-2.0 and DeepSeek’s V4-Pro led China's AI industry with 1.6 trillion total parameters.

The unveiling of Kimi K3 has driven down the share prices of domestic AI competitors Zhipu and Minimax in Hong Kong. By midday, they were down 21.9 per cent and 13.8 per cent respectively. This development highlights the intensifying global AI race and the rapid advancements being made by Chinese companies.
