The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed a combined fine of Rs. 740 million on four major mobile network operators, including Ufone, Zong, Jazz, and Telenor, for violations in SIM card issuance processes.

According to the PTA, Ufone was fined more than Rs. 233.4 million, followed by Zong with Rs. 155.6 million, Jazz with Rs. 116.7 million, and Telenor also received a fine of Rs. 116.7 million.

The PTA stated that the operators were penalized for serious irregularities in the SIM issuance process, including violations of SIM registration regulations and failure to maintain adequate oversight.

In its decision, the PTA emphasized that mobile operators would be held liable for any violations committed by their franchisees, as they failed to effectively monitor their networks and biometric verification systems.

The authority directed all four operators to pay the fines within a prescribed timeframe, warning of further legal action if compliance was not met. The PTA stressed the importance of strict enforcement of SIM registration rules to prevent identity theft, cyber fraud, and financial crimes.

PTA spokespersons stated that unauthorized SIM registrations could lead to significant security risks for consumers, highlighting the need for robust regulatory measures. They also noted that the illegal issuance of SIM cards undermines national security by facilitating criminal activities.

The PTA's actions are part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with national identity card regulations and protect consumer rights in the telecommunications sector.
