New York Governor Uses AI to Review State Legislation

Key Takeaways

  • Governor Kathy Hochul is employing AI technology to review all state rules and policies.
  • The aim is to identify outdated laws that may need updating or removal.
  • Examples of outdated laws include a $25 fee for taking a dog hunting.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to review every single rule, regulation, and policy in the state. This initiative aims to identify and update or remove any outdated legislation that may no longer be relevant.

During an interview with Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast, Hochul revealed that her team is leveraging AI to analyze these laws. The governor cited examples of archaic statutes such as a $25 fee required for taking a dog hunting, which she noted would likely have taken five years to review at the staff level without AI assistance.

Hochul emphasized the importance of modernizing state regulations: 'We want to make sure that our laws are up-to-date and relevant in today's world. AI is helping us do this more efficiently.'

The governor highlighted another example, mentioning a stipulation that pregnant people need a permit to work after midnight. She stated, 'These kinds of outdated rules can create unnecessary barriers for individuals and businesses. We're using technology to streamline the process and ensure fairness.'

According to Hochul, this approach will not only help in identifying obsolete laws but also in streamlining administrative processes. 'The goal is to make our government more efficient and responsive to the needs of New York residents,' she added.

While the governor did not provide a specific timeline for completing this review, she expressed confidence that AI would significantly expedite the process. 'We're committed to using innovative tools like AI to improve governance and enhance public service delivery,' Hochul concluded.

The use of AI in legislative review is gaining traction across various states as a means to modernize outdated laws and regulations. This move by Governor Hochul signals New York's commitment to leveraging technology for better governance.
