US stocks rally despite SpaceX earnings dip
Stock market traders working on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Key Takeaways

  • Wall Street opened higher, extending gains on strong corporate earnings.
  • SpaceX fell sharply after reporting a significant AI spending concern.
  • Disney reported better-than-expected profits, boosting the market.

US stocks continued their upward trend early Wednesday, with major indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 gaining ground. The Dow rose by 0.9 percent to 54,586.35 points, while the broader S&P 500 increased by 0.7 percent to 7,788.02.

The positive momentum was attributed to strong corporate earnings and optimistic remarks from US-Iran relations officials regarding a potential deal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Cresset Capital’s Jack Ablin highlighted these factors as contributing positively to market sentiment.

However, SpaceX's stock took a hit, dropping 12.5 percent despite reporting a 92 percent increase in second-quarter revenues from AI computing deals and Starlink satellite growth. Analysts expressed concerns over the company's substantial spending of $18 billion in the three months ending June, which exceeded expectations.

Despite SpaceX’s setback, other companies such as Disney provided a boost to the market with better-than-expected profits. The entertainment giant saw its stock rise by 2.6 percent following strong performance in its theme park business.

Private sector hiring numbers for July also came in lower than anticipated, with payroll firm ADP reporting only 44,000 new jobs compared to the expected 75,000. These figures are closely watched ahead of official employment data due on Friday, although they can sometimes diverge from the final reports.

Market analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the overall performance and outlook for US stocks, with a focus on earnings season and potential geopolitical developments influencing investor sentiment.
