Qatari mediators are set to hold separate talks with the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the US side in New York on Monday or Tuesday, according to an official briefed on the negotiations.
The talks are part of a renewed push to end the ongoing conflict, with the mediators expected to examine the latest proposals and views regarding the current situation.
Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency confirmed that Araqchi would meet the mediators in the United States on Monday morning, New York time.
The seven-day proposal Iran presented last week envisages an end to all hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the unfreezing of billions of dollars worth of Iranian assets, an end to sanctions on Iranian oil, and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.
Tehran would also allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the two sides would resume talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s proposal, stating that Tehran wanted a swift agreement due to the crippling economic pressure it is under.
However, Trump also told Axios on Sunday that he expected US negotiators to engage in further talks this week.
Araqchi said that mediators had not formally conveyed a US rejection to Tehran and that Iran was awaiting Washington’s definitive position before deciding its next steps.
He added that only a negotiated solution could resolve the impasse, with Iran’s conditions being clear and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz contingent on these conditions being met.
