Yemen experienced its most significant military escalation in three weeks between government forces and the Houthi group. Clashes focused within the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahej.

The army stated on Thursday that it successfully thwarted a major Houthi attack across several fronts in Taiz and Lahej. Furthermore, government forces repelled a Houthi assault on the Sharie area, which lies in the Sama’a district southeast of Taiz.

This specific attack on the Sharie area marked the first time the Houthis launched an assault on the district since 2014. The escalation since July has seen the number of displaced persons approach 198,000.

More precisely, the number of people registered as displaced since the military escalation resumed in July stood at 197,906 people across 29,519 families. Taiz alone accounted for 97,529 people residing in 13,925 families.

In Lahej, 50,253 people were recorded across 7,179 families. Aden received 17,782 people from 3,741 families.

Abyan recorded 14,679 people residing in 2,097 families. The Yemen’s Human Rights Ministry issued a warning regarding the increasing presence of children recruited by the Houthis.

The ministry documented that at least 100 children, recruited by the Houthis during fighting, died in September. Saudi Arabia announced its complete backing for the government to extend its authority and restore stability in Yemen on Wednesday.
