Nigerian police located a camp holding nineteen national youth service recruits in the south-eastern Imo state of Nigeria. Drones assisted authorities in pinpointing the location where prospective National Youth Service Corps members were taken.

The abducted youths were travelling from Ibadan in the south-west region to NYSC orientation camps situated in Abia and Akwa Ibom states on Thursday. Kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom amounting to fifty million naira, which equates to $37,680 or £28,440, according to Omotosho Adewale.

Police personnel cannot enter the camp area because of suspected explosives, a detail Audu Bosso stated, confirming the camp is mined with IEDs. Authorities are deploying bulldozers and armoured vehicles to facilitate a rescue operation at the site.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) constitutes a mandatory one-year programme for the majority of Nigerian university and polytechnic graduates. Previously, the NYSC had indicated it would not assign its members to areas deemed high-risk.
