Prime Video will release a new television series based on Stephen King's debut novel, Carrie, which will examine the story fifty years into a world dominated by social media. Summer H Howell stars as Carrie in this new adaptation.
The adaptation will launch on Prime Video on 7 October. Fans of the novel note that the new version of Carrie is not 'book accurate'.
Regarding the source material, Summer H Howell stated, "There's a lot of opinions, and I purposely avoided the original movie and and the book before filming because I hadn't seen it or read it." She further commented that the narrative concerns an outsider, adding, "It's the story of an outsider, and bullying has not gone away in 50 years," she says. "If anything, it's just gotten worse with social media."
Alison Thornton suggested that social media functions "kind of a villain in the show." The show aims to illustrate how online posts can have "repercussions in real life."
Mike Flanagan elaborated on the permanence of digital content, stating, "It's happening with the audience of the entire digital world and enshrined forever, permanently on these platforms. "It's a whole different ball game that way."" Concerning fan reception, Mike Flanagan mentioned, "I try to think about how fans will feel because I'm a Stephen King fan first," he says. "So I have very strong opinions about changes that are made in adaptation.""
