An Emirati princess, Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, has admitted to child neglect after being found unconscious on a busy London street, according to court proceedings.
The incident occurred when passersby found her slumped on railings near an unconscious man, while a barefoot toddler played close to moving traffic.
Al Nahyan, who was looking after the three-year-old child, remained unresponsive for about half an hour before waking up, shouting at those who intervened.
A video recorded by an onlooker showed her lying on the pavement next to children’s toys, including a scooter and a toy plane, while a man was found sprawled out nearby.
The court heard that Al Nahyan has been in drug addiction treatment at the Priory Centre in Woking, Surrey, since the incident, and has shown significant remorse.
Defence counsel Stephen Vullo KC stated that she had stopped using drugs since entering the Priory in July and planned to complete a three-month programme by the end of the month.
Justice Johnson KC sentenced Al Nahyan to a two-year community order with a rehabilitation requirement, fined her £5,000, and ordered her to pay £1,000 in costs.
The judge warned that by leaving the child to play barefoot in the street while under the influence of drugs, she showed recklessness and disregard for the child’s safety.
Al Nahyan’s admission and sentencing reflect the serious consequences of drug use and the importance of parental responsibility, especially in high-profile cases.
