Chinese AI company Moonshot AI has unveiled Kimi K3, a groundbreaking open 3T-class artificial intelligence model with 2.8 trillion parameters. This launch marks a significant milestone in the field of open-source AI, setting new standards for performance and capabilities.
According to Moonshot AI, Kimi K3 is designed to excel in long-horizon coding, knowledge work, reasoning, and multimodal tasks. The company claims that while it still falls short of proprietary models like Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol in overall performance and user experience, Kimi K3 consistently outperforms other tested open AI models.
The model boasts a unique architecture called Kimi Delta Attention and Attention Residuals, which improve information flow across long sequences and deep layers. Additionally, Moonshot has implemented Stable LatentMoE during inference, activating 16 out of 896 experts to enhance its efficiency by about 2.5 times compared to the previous model, Kimi K2.
Kimi K3 is particularly focused on coding tasks with limited human oversight. The company highlights several examples where the AI successfully built a browser-based 3D open-world game using Three.js and WebGPU, as well as creating MiniTriton, a compact compiler with its own IR layer and optimization passes.
In benchmark comparisons, Kimi K3 demonstrated strong performance in coding tasks such as program benchmarks, terminal interaction, and kernel optimization. However, it still trails behind models like Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol in certain areas of evaluation.
Moonshot AI plans to release full model weights by July 27, 2026, along with a technical report detailing the architecture, training, and evaluation processes. The company also intends to introduce low and high-effort thinking modes for future versions of Kimi K3.
The launch of Kimi K3 represents an important step towards democratizing advanced AI capabilities, making them accessible to developers and researchers worldwide. As Moonshot continues to refine its model, it aims to bridge the gap between open-source and proprietary AI solutions.
