PM Shehbaz Visits Qatar to Convey Condolences

Key Takeaways

  • Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Qatar for a one-day visit.
  • The visit includes meetings with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
  • Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar, has passed away at 74.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Qatar on Monday for a one-day visit, accompanied by key ministers including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar. The purpose of the visit is to extend condolences to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani following the passing of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, was a pivotal figure in transforming Qatar into a regional powerhouse. His legacy includes the development of Al Jazeera television and the successful bid for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament.

Qatar is known for its significant role in Middle Eastern diplomacy and international media. Despite being a small nation with over 2.5 million people, it stands out as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas and a global investment powerhouse.

During his visit, PM Shehbaz will meet Emir Sheikh Tamim to convey Pakistan's condolences for the loss of former Emir Sheikh Hamad. The meeting is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

The visit comes at a time when regional tensions are high, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has slowed due to ongoing Iran-related issues. However, this development does not appear to impact Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements with Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad’s abdication in 2013 was notable as it marked a rare instance of a hereditary Gulf Arab ruler voluntarily handing over power to his son. This transition aimed at ensuring a smooth succession and maintaining stability within the ruling family.

The visit underscores Pakistan's commitment to regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement, particularly with key allies like Qatar.
