Asian stocks rise as US markets recover, tech sector leads gains

Key Takeaways

  • Asian shares surged at the start of trading on Wednesday.
  • South Korea’s Kospi index jumped more than 6%.
  • Tech sector returns drove market gains despite geopolitical risks.

Asian stocks experienced a significant rebound at the opening of trading on Wednesday, with investors responding positively to a recovery in US markets. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index outside Japan saw an increase of 1.2%, reflecting broad-based optimism across the region.

South Korea’s Kospi index led the gains, surging more than 6% as semiconductor stocks bounced back after recent losses. This performance was particularly notable given the ongoing Middle East conflict and rising oil prices, which initially posed a risk to market sentiment.

Japan's Nikkei 225 also saw an increase of 1.9%, while S&P 500 e-mini futures edged up by 0.1%. The recovery in US markets provided a strong foundation for the Asian bourses, with investors focusing on tech sector returns and positive earnings reports from key companies.

The rebound in semiconductor shares was driven by data showing that Korean semiconductor exports almost tripled during the first few weeks of July. Additionally, a gauge of Taiwanese export orders for June topped expectations, further boosting investor confidence in the tech sector.

Market focus will now shift to upcoming earnings reports from major US companies such as Alphabet and Tesla. Investors are closely watching these reports due to heightened scrutiny over Alphabet’s AI ambitions and Tesla’s spending on AI and robotics, which is expected to result in its first quarterly cash burn in over two years.

Pharmaceuticals also remain a key area of interest following President Donald Trump's announcement that all generic drugs brought into the United States will carry a 0% tariff for two years from August 1. This move aims to reduce costs and increase access to affordable medications, potentially impacting pharmaceutical stocks positively.

Geopolitical risks, including threats by Houthi rebels to open new fronts in the Middle East conflict, did not significantly impact market sentiment. Westpac analysts noted that equity markets shrugged off these geopolitical concerns, focusing instead on sector-specific returns, particularly in tech and semiconductors.

The US dollar index held near a one-week high of 101.20 against six key currencies, while the greenback weakened slightly against the Japanese yen to 163.06 yen after setting a four-decade high on Tuesday. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond was up by 0.2 basis points at 4.628%, and gold prices rose by 0.5%.

In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin saw a modest increase of 0.3% to $66,611.73, while Ether climbed 0.7% to $1,936.18. Despite rising oil prices settling at a five-week high on Tuesday, bond and currency markets remained relatively stable ahead of upcoming central bank meetings next week.
