Suspect in child murder case sent on five-day remand

Key Takeaways

  • A 20-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a six-year-old boy was handed over to police for five days.
  • The victim's body was found in an empty plot near Karachi’s Lea Market after he went missing.
  • Police suspect the suspect is a neighbour from Lahore who confessed during initial interrogation.

A judicial magistrate in Karachi has ordered that a 20-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a six-year-old boy be sent on a five-day physical remand. The child’s body was discovered in an empty plot near the city's Lea Market, following his disappearance.

The incident occurred on July 7 when the boy went missing after leaving his home. His body was found the next night, wrapped in a gunny bag and thrown from the third floor of a house into the plot by residents who had noticed it earlier.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza, the suspect is a local resident originally from Lahore and is suspected to be involved in both kidnapping and murder. He confessed during initial interrogation that he had kidnapped the boy for sexual purposes before allegedly killing him.

Dr Summaiya Syed, the police surgeon who examined the body, reported multiple bone injuries and decomposition. Samples were collected for sexual violence and chemical analysis, with the cause of death pending further investigation.

The suspect was brought to City Courts on Thursday under tight security, his face covered by a mask. Napier police requested a 14-day physical remand to interrogate him and arrest any accomplices. However, the court granted only a five-day remand, directing the IO to produce the suspect with a progress report at the next hearing.

The case has been registered under Section 3 of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act of 2018 and Section 364-A of the Pakistan Penal Code. The investigation is ongoing as police continue to search for any accomplices involved in the crime.

Local residents played a crucial role in bringing the suspect to justice, beating him before the police arrived after noticing the body. This incident highlights the vigilance and community involvement that often plays a significant role in such cases.
