Yemen’s Houthis Declare Naval Blockade Against Saudi Arabia

Yemen's Houthis Declare Naval Blockade Against Saudi Arabia

Key Takeaways

  • Yemen’s Houthis announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.
  • The blockade is in response to Saudi Arabia’s long-standing siege on Yemen.
  • Houthis claim the move follows recent missile attacks by Saudi Arabia.

Yemen's Houthi group has declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, effective immediately. In a televised statement, their military spokesperson announced that 'a maritime embargo against the criminal Saudi enemy' would be enforced based on the principle of 'an eye for an eye.'

The Houthis cited Saudi Arabia’s ongoing 'unjust and oppressive siege' on Yemen, which has lasted nearly 12 years. They accused the kingdom of plundering their resources and imposing a comprehensive blockade through land, sea, and air routes.

This declaration comes after the Houthi group launched missile attacks against Saudi Arabia last week, accusing the kingdom of bombing an airport under their control, thus breaking a four-year truce in the conflict. The strikes were the first claimed by the Houthis since March 2022 when an informal truce was established following Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.

The move is likely to escalate tensions between the two countries further and could have significant implications for regional stability, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Analysts suggest that such a blockade could disrupt trade routes and exacerbate humanitarian crises in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has not yet commented publicly on the Houthi declaration. However, the kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously stated that it would continue to uphold its stance against the Houthis, emphasizing their role as an 'armed terrorist group.'

The United States and Iran have also been involved in the conflict, with reports suggesting that Iran has advised the Houthis to close a Red Sea gateway if the U.S. were to hit Saudi Arabia's power network.

This development highlights the complex nature of the ongoing conflict in Yemen and its far-reaching consequences for regional security and stability.
