A Mississippi grand jury declined to bring criminal charges regarding the death of Nolan Wells. The jury determined that the death was consistent with drowning. Jackson county district attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated that the death was not racially motivated. Friends of Nolan Wells subsequently sued Terrell Owens for defamation. Furthermore, three friends of Nolan Wells initiated legal proceedings against Owens in a Mississippi district court.

Owens posted an Instagram video suggesting that Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour deleted evidence from Nolan Wells’s phone. During the events, Nolan Wells and his friends sailed to a Mississippi island on 4 July. Wells's body was discovered on the island two days after he was last seen. The family of Nolan Wells contended that the absence of water evidence undermines the finding of drowning. Following the ruling, Christine Wonsley stated, "I cannot take that ruling, and I cannot move on with my life."
