Jamie Overton would consider returning to the England Test squad for next year's Ashes if approached by captain Joe Root. The 32-year-old bowler told reporters, "If Rooty comes to me and says that then, yeah, then I'll have to have a serious think about it."

Overton has taken an indefinite break from red-ball cricket despite being part of the England squad for the ongoing one-day tri-series in Pakistan. Harry Brook asked Overton about making himself available for Test cricket during the current tour.

Overton played in England's final Test of the home summer in 2025 against India, where he bowled 38 overs. That appearance in the fifth Test in July 2025 was his second Test cap.

The bowler has played in 8 Tests in total, including a 99 on his debut against New Zealand in 2022. Before his return to the Test team, Overton played only 4 first-class matches over a two-year period.

England was beaten by Pakistan in their tri-series opener in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The team meets Sri Lanka at the same ground on Thursday.
