Punjab government bans junk food and tobacco in educational institutions

The Punjab government has prohibited the sale of specific beverages, food items, and tobacco products within educational institutions across the province. Schools, colleges, universities, and other learning centers are included in this new mandate.
Prohibited items include energy drinks, carbonated beverages, artificial drinks, and products containing monosodium glutamate (MSG). The ban also covers vapes, tobacco products, ice lollies, cotton candy, and gola ganda.
A three-category system—green, yellow, and red—now classifies food based on its nutritional value, with nutritious foods designated as green. Businesses operating within 100 metres of any educational institution must adhere to these amended rules.
The official regulations were published in the Punjab Gazette.
