Public inquiry begins examining 2,000 mental health deaths under Essex care

A public inquiry has commenced its examination into the deaths of over 2,000 people who received care under Essex mental health services. Hearings for the inquiry are scheduled to begin on 5 October.
The investigation will hear evidence presented by NHS England, the Care Quality Commission, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Interim recommendations from the inquiry are anticipated to concentrate on improving safety within inpatient settings.
The inquiry is also looking into the Oxevision system. During the latest sessions at Chelmsford Civic Centre, families were invited to provide their views on potential recommendations during a virtual hearing on 20 October.
Tammy Smith stated, “It actually takes away human interaction. They are at their most vulnerable. "They need those conversations. They need someone to ask, 'Are you OK? Do you need anything?' We all need that."” The final report from the inquiry is not expected until 2028.
