Borussia Dortmund secured a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen during the second round of the German Cup. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for Dortmund, while Niclas Fuellkrug netted two goals in a span of four minutes.
Fuellkrug, who joined the club on a season-long loan from West Ham, has scored in seven previous matches against Bremen. The striker has accumulated 11 goals in nine appearances so far this season.
Christoph Baumgartner scored twice in the final 12 minutes to keep Werder Bremen in the contest until Marcel Sabitzer found the net in stoppage time. Regarding his late contribution, Sabitzer said, "I'm really happy it went in. My right foot has always been pretty decent. It's good for the team, but also good for me."
Other results in the competition saw RB Leipzig defeat Rot-Weiss Essen 2-1, a side that won the tournament in 2022 and 2023. Nicolas Seiwald was sent off after receiving a second yellow card during that match.
Eintracht Frankfurt beat Hamburg 3-1, while Cologne recorded a 5-0 win over Union Berlin thanks to two goals from Said El Mala. Mainz suffered a defeat against Bochum, whereas Augsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach both won to advance to the last 16.
Bayern Munich is scheduled to host Magdeburg on Wednesday. Harry Kane was awarded the Ballon d'Or on Monday.
