Malina Weissman stars as Briar, whose story centres on her grief and anger following the unsolved murder of her mother, Mary. Briar forms friendships with two witches, Sasha, played by Jordan Leftwich, and Tegan, played by Ora Duplass.
The school's headmaster is Miss Graves, portrayed by Tiffani Thiessen. Information from Mr. Cole, played by Devon Sawa, leads the young witches to suspect Miss Graves of committing the murder.
A shapeshifting Warlock named William is revealed to be the father of Jake, played by Malachi Barton. William and his associates previously attempted to contaminate the ley lines, which serve as the mystical power source for all witches and warlocks.
William killed Mary after the coven interrupted a spell he was casting that would have restricted them to using only dark magic. The series suggests that Briar's perceived fault, such as being hot-headed, is actually the origin of her power.
Furthermore, Tegan's capacity to manipulate time is linked to her ADHD. Sasha possesses empathy, allowing her to read others, though she struggles with her own emotions.
Dark magic is likened to substance abuse, a habit that can remain harmless but may become overwhelming if pursued deeply. The narrative structure separates the witches, focusing on girlhood and sisterhood, from the warlocks, who undergo a solitary journey.
Jake's character development explores the concept of nature versus nurture, while he was influenced by a male figure exhibiting misogyny. In the final chapter, Jake and Briar nearly shared a kiss.
