Amjad Hussain takes oath as Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan

Amjad Hussain assumed the role of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after taking the official oath. Hussain previously spent a decade as the regional president for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
The new chief minister also held positions as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and as the Leader of the Opposition. Under his leadership, the government intends to schedule local government elections for 2026.
To facilitate these polls, the administration proposed amending the relevant laws and reviving local government elections following a 24-year gap. Infrastructure and environmental priorities include the expansion of the Gilgit airport and the creation of the Gilgit-Baltistan Glacier Protection Authority.
Hussain noted the previous administrations of Mehdi Shah, Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman, Khalid Khurshid, and Haji Gulbar Khan. The region currently faces a backlog of incomplete development projects that the new government must address.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari serves as the chairman of the PPP.
