The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) confirmed that the deadline for filing the 2026 income tax return is 30 September. The FBR warned that failure to file on time may result in penalties, additional tax liabilities, and potential legal action.

Furthermore, the government will abolish the late-filer category starting from 1 October. For individuals, the penalty for submitting an income tax return after the due date increases from Rs1,000 to Rs25,000.

AOPs face a penalty hike, rising from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000 for late filing. Companies will see their penalty limit increase up to Rs100,000, an increase from the previous Rs20,000.

Recovering outstanding tax amounts, the FBR may utilise bank accounts and other available methods. Regarding banking operations, the State Bank of Pakistan directed commercial banks to keep their branches open until 10 pm on Wednesday.

The State Bank of Pakistan also instructed commercial banks to guarantee uninterrupted digital payment channels. The State Bank of Pakistan stated that "The banks shall also ensure uninterrupted availability of their online payment channels i.e. internet banking, mobile applications, ATMs, and other digital platforms to facilitate the online payment of government duties and taxes."
