Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has initiated a significant public-private partnership (PPP) model by transferring the management and administration of five major road projects to private operators. These projects include the Muridke–Narowal Road, Shakargarh–Narowal Road, Faisalabad Ring Road, Faisalabad–Sahianwala Road, and Faisalabad–Samundri–Rajana Road.
According to Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, the move is expected to generate Rs. 22 billion in revenue for the provincial government. The private operators will be responsible for collecting revenue and handling road maintenance and repairs for a period of seven years.
To facilitate the smooth operation of these roads, modern electronic toll plazas will be constructed along the routes. Aurangzeb also mentioned that additional projects are being prepared under the PPP framework, including hostels, hospitals, parks, sports grounds, waste-to-energy plants, and industrial wastewater treatment facilities.
The project processing period has been reduced from two years to six months, aiming to improve efficiency. Four more roads are set to follow this model: Bahawalpur–Yazman Road, Yazman–Ahmedpur East Road, Raiwind–Changa Manga Road, and Gajjumata–Kasur Road.
The PPP model assigns operational and maintenance responsibilities to the private sector for a defined period, rather than selling the roads outright. This approach is intended to leverage private sector expertise and resources to enhance road infrastructure and revenue generation.
Aurangzeb highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize and improve road infrastructure in Punjab. The projects are expected to contribute significantly to the provincial economy and provide better transportation services to the public.
