Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green light to an expansion of the province’s electric bus service to the tehsil level, with operations set to commence in January 2027.
The initiative aims to enhance public transport facilities and offer cleaner commuting options to residents across Punjab.
Under the expansion plan, 1,500 electric buses will be deployed across 91 tehsils, with the first batch expected to arrive in Lahore in January 2027.
The provincial government has ambitious plans to have 3,000 electric buses operating across Punjab by June 2027, with the first phase of the service targeted for completion by September.
The expansion will see 169 buses serving nine tehsils of Multan, 87 buses across four tehsils of Sahiwal, 63 buses for Dera Ghazi Khan, and 215 buses for 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur.
Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils will receive 202 buses, while another 198 buses will operate across 14 tehsils of Sargodha. Additional buses are also being allocated to Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Attock.
Okara, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat, and Sheikhupura will also receive additional buses as part of the expansion.
According to the government, 612 electric buses are already in operation in different districts, benefiting millions of residents daily. Another 192 buses in Multan and other districts are expected to become operational within the next few days.
The chief minister has also approved additional electric buses for various districts, including Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Attock.
