Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended an invitation to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for a meeting to discuss ways to ease tensions between the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments.
The meeting, which is expected to take place soon, comes amid mounting tensions over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s march on Islamabad, with party supporters already on the streets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since October 4.
The federal government and the opposition PTI have, in principle, agreed to accept JUI-F as a mediator to help resolve their political differences, according to a Business Recorder report.
Sources close to the development told the publication that both the government and PTI have approached Maulana Fazl to play a mediating role.
However, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl has set certain conditions before formally taking up the task, as reported by Business Recorder on Thursday.
Fazl has reportedly made it clear that he would intervene only after the parties reach an understanding on certain fundamental issues, urging both sides to acknowledge each other’s positions and make efforts to find common ground through political engagement.
The invitation from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Maulana Fazlur Rehman reflects the government’s efforts to address the ongoing political tensions and find a peaceful resolution.
The meeting is seen as a significant step towards de-escalating the situation, with both sides expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue.
