The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a new $200,000 award for the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises, aimed at incentivising development in the sport. The inaugural HBL PSL Cricket Development Excellence Award will evaluate the development work undertaken by the franchises from the third edition of the league through its 11th edition.
According to the PCB, the award is intended to recognise 'genuine long-term investment' in Pakistan cricket, structured player pathways, and measurable standards for the professional development of cricketers.
For the inaugural award, franchises will assess their own performance using a scoring model devised by the HBL PSL before submitting their scores and supporting evidence to a five-member assessment committee constituted by the PCB.
The committee, comprising independent experts and PCB stakeholders, will verify the scores against evidence and 'verifiable data points'. This assessment will account for 80 per cent of the final score, with the remaining 20 per cent coming from a fan vote.
Franchises will first be required to publish presentations highlighting their cricket development work on the PSL’s official social media platforms, following which fans will vote and rank their development efforts.
The scoring model gives the highest weightage of 25 per cent to player pathways and development, followed by grassroots and domestic engagement at 20 per cent. High-performance infrastructure and innovations carry 15 per cent, while player impact and match contribution and player welfare and education account for 10 per cent each.
Under the player pathway category, franchises will be assessed on new or uncapped players they identify, their development and progression, and the cricket exposure provided to them outside the PSL.
The player impact category will assess the trajectory of players scouted or discovered by franchises, including their match-winning contributions and expansion of their roles within their respective teams.
The infrastructure and innovation category will cover facilities, staffing and systems, as well as the use of technology. The welfare and education category would include financial literacy and educational support, mental health systems, media training, anti-doping and anti-corruption education, and career-transition plans.
The grassroots and domestic engagement category will cover both men’s and women’s cricket, coaching clinics for children, school and club initiatives, and participation in PCB-organised cricket.
The PCB said the award would be assessed differently from next year. After the 11th edition, only development work carried out between the two most recent editions of the PSL will be considered for the award.
