According to the Pakistan Battery Import Market Report, between January 2024 and August 2026, batteries with a combined storage capacity of 6.004 gigawatts were imported into the country. The peak import occurred in April 2026, when 652.2 megawatts of batteries entered Pakistan.
The report highlights that consumers invested Rs. 126 billion in battery systems during a single month—April alone. This significant investment reflects the growing preference among households to store surplus solar power for later use rather than exporting it to the grid.
This trend has led the government to begin preparing a National Battery Framework, indicating an urgent need to address and regulate this emerging sector.
Pakistan currently generates around 39,000 megawatts of electricity excluding solar power. However, transmission and distribution losses account for up to 18 percent of total generation, highlighting the potential benefits of local storage solutions.
Globally, energy storage capacity is expected to reach 1.5 million megawatts by 2030, with battery storage investments projected to total $1.2 trillion between 2024 and 2035. This underscores the growing importance of battery technology in the region.
