OpenAI has introduced a new API called Decisions, which is now available in public beta. This API is designed to help applications make fast, structured decisions, such as choosing a model, tool, action, category, or next step.
According to OpenAI, the Decisions API can return decisions up to 10 times faster than GPT-6 Luna through the Responses API. The API is currently powered by GPT-6 Luna and is accessible through the dedicated /v1/decisions endpoint.
The Decisions API supports three main output types: Predicates, which estimate the probability that a statement is true; Choices, which select from predefined options and return confidence scores; and Scores, which evaluate an input against an ordered numeric scale or rubric.
Developers can use the API for various tasks, such as classifying content, routing requests, prioritizing work, checking conditions, and selecting an agent’s next action. For example, an application could decide which support department should receive a request, determine whether an item is damaged, choose which tool an AI agent should use next, or assign a severity score to an issue.
The API returns typed answers instead of free-form text, reducing the need to parse generated responses into structured formats. Pricing for the Decisions API with GPT-6 Luna is $0.10 per 1 million input tokens. OpenAI does not charge separately for output tokens, cache reads, or cache writes for Decisions API requests.
The API also reports token usage and can return probability scores that developers can use to set thresholds before automatically taking an action. OpenAI first revealed the API during DevDay 2026 in late September, making it available only in limited preview. The wider public beta rollout began on October 6, 2026.
OpenAI expects to move the service to general availability in the coming weeks. The Decisions API is currently in public beta and is expected to be widely available soon.
