Key Takeaways

  • Ning Xu's winning video was disqualified for using AI.
  • Nguyen Nam Nhat of Vietnam is the new winner.
  • The Nikon Small World in Motion competition aims to showcase microscopic beauty.

Ning Xu, a winner of the Nikon Small World in Motion video competition, has had his entry disqualified after allegations of AI use surfaced. The investigation, launched by Nikon, concluded that Xu's video did not comply with the competition rules.

The new winner, Nguyen Nam Nhat, from Vietnam, has been awarded for his video featuring a tiny roundworm and a single-celled organism. This decision has moved up the rankings of other contestants, including Benedikt Pleyer from Germany, who now takes second place with a video of jellyfish larvae.

According to a BBC report, some researchers raised concerns about structural abnormalities in Xu's video and noted that cell features appeared and disappeared in a manner inconsistent with actual cellular biology. Additionally, AI watermarks were reportedly found within the source files.

Xu defended his use of AI, stating that it was only used to distinguish and visualize features in reconstructed grayscale images. He denied that AI was used to generate the experimental movie, the cilia, or their motion.

The Nikon Small World in Motion competition, established in 2011, is a spinoff of the company’s long-standing Small World Photomicrography Competition, which began in 1974. Both competitions aim to highlight the beauty and complexity of microscopic subjects through photovideography and still photographs.

The other winners also moved up a notch with Xu's disqualification. Second place goes to Benedikt Pleyer from Germany, who captured jellyfish larvae suspended in water droplets. Third place is awarded to Andrew Moore from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the US, who filmed synchronized cell division in neighboring cells.

Fourth place is taken by Patrick Hickey from Hypha Research Ltd. in Edinburgh, Scotland, who documented the dynamics of mitochondria and chloroplasts in Turtle Vine leaf cells. Fifth place is given to Igor Adameyko, who filmed a tiny, colorful sea slug (Cyerce kikutarobabai) in motion.

The Nikon Small World in Motion competition continues to attract global participation, showcasing the latest advancements in microscopic imaging technology and the creativity of scientists and researchers.
